In removing the stock exhaust I replaced it with a 2.25" system with a Magnaflow straight-through muffler. It was terribly loud. I would call it unbearable. The shop took out the straight-through design and replaced it with a baffled design. The noise went way down I thought I felt an increase in torque. When I asked the guy at the shop about this, he told me that the new muffler increased backpressure and torque. And decreased noise and horsepower.
After a short time this baffeled muffler resonance became annoying. Wnen I asked the guy at the shop about going quieter he told me that to go quieter muffler would significantly reduce performance.

I believe him, but I am not sure I understand the whole relationship between noise, torque, and hp. Would a stock system with the most back-pressure, create the most torque?

On top of that, even if I went with a quiet muffler, I would still be better off than stock because of the increase in diameter, right?

So what do you think? What do you run? Do you like it?

Just so you know, I like the loud rumble of a V8. This I6 is kind of annoying when loud.
