Could someone describe what sounds my 96 XJ will make if a CV joint was starting to go bad?

The Clunk happens when turning side to side, when accelerating in a straight line, and shifting (automatic trans) from Park to drive/reverse. I've never hear the clunk when going up and down over something like going over a speed bump.

I've checked the track bar (pan hard) and that's not it.

Thanks,
Big drake

Having about the same problem with mine except it just does it side to side.
I'm going to just get under it and tighten EVERYTHING. and see if that helps.
Since yours does it from forward to reverse it could be related to your brakes.
I would check for loose caliper bolts or loose wheel first and then go on to suspension parts.
Good luck.

Check your upper control arm bushings as well.
