What year did the body style change when the spare tire was put under floor and lowered the gas tank? How does this affect ground clearence if you dont put a 3+" lift on vehicle???
Thinking of a newer one for wifey............... bowdown

Body style changed in 99 and the spare went from inside on drivers side wall. To under floor pan .. What they did was lower the gas tank to accomadate the spare..

I dont think it really affected ground clearance that much .. But if you are going to wheel a WJ (99 to 2004) Make sure you have a good gas tank skid on it..

The WJ has its tank under the spare compartment, tons of people complain about it. There is a skid plate, it is good one that can take the wieght of the vehicle easily, I have gashes out of mine, it may not be Moab certified, but most will never get through, it or even hit it that much with any lift/tire combo, the departure angle is a straight shot for the hitch anyhow.. There is also a "brush guard" NOT to be cofused with the skid plate, this is a thin piece that will NOT stop things... At some point the tank skid combo became known as the "diaper" because after a lift and trimming or a bumper it hangs down and looks funny...
There are two mods around right now, one is cutting the spare well up and shoving a ZJ tank under there, it raises the tank around 4" lots involved. The other I had seen a guy on JU do is a nice circular fuel cell sunk into the spare well, guessing it was pretty tough with all the wiring pump and lines, but it is in a wild Jeep with many other mods to justify that extent.
If you stay stock, maybe go to some 247/75/16 you will probably never screw it up, plus it is fun to listen to it drag over a mud covered rock.
Just be sure yours is the skid, hit it hard with a hammer, I can really barely ding mine with a 2lb.er
