1st time Jeep owner, bought a 95 Cherokee 4.0 Automatic, it has been running perfectly, but today a loud grinding noise started coming from the Transmission (I think)when it is in Park or Neutral, but as soon as I put it in gear the grinding noise quits.
Someone said my transmission linkage could be out of adjustment or I could have loose Flywheel bolts, but it only occurs in Park and Neutral.
Any help or Ideas?
Thanks

I had the same problem with my 96 XJ... I replaced the ignition switch and starter and the problem cleared up. What I found was in P and N the starter was engaging itself. The starter was toasted from getting spun up by the motor. My guess was on mine there was some short in the ignition switch itself, but fixed the problem! Good luck!

Allright thanks, sounds alot easier than pulling apart the transmission. I will have to check it out, but the starter is working fine. I am having a mechanic friend look at it at his shop on Friday, so maybe it will be good news.
