I have an 87 4.2. The starter has an external selenoid. I installed a motor out of an 89 4.2. The 89 starter has the selenoid on the starter. I tried to use the 87 starter but it doesn't work, makes an awful sound. So I have to use the starter from the 89. Unfortunately I don't know how to change the wiring from the external selenoid as the selenoid on the 89 starter only has one terminal to connect wires to and the external selonoid has two terminals. One one of the terminals there is two small wires and on the second terminal there is one wire.

When you say it sounds awful, is it a grinding sound?
