I bought a 2005 TJ.

With the top ON, in the city, I'm getting about 12-13 mpg.

With the top OFF, in the city, I'm getting almost exactly 10 mpg.

Um, is this normal?????!?!???!??

With 34" tires and a soft top, I get 12-14 on a good day. Wink

The more miles I get on my 2006 Unlimited the better the mileage gets. I just turned over 2000 miles and my last tank of gas, all town driving, averaged 15.5 mpg. Much better than the first few tanks that were running about 13 mpg.

All miles so far with the hardtop on.

What mods, if any...because that is FAR from normal.

With 32s, 1" BBL, intake/exhaust mods, I get 17-18mpg @80mph (hwy)...so it would be MUCH better if I kept it at 65-70mph...I get 15-16 in stop/go traffic (city). So I'm thinking something is seriously wrong with your rig, or you have some unmentioned mods.

What's mileage? ???
I quit even looking. But I'm running 35's and it's not my DD. However, when I was running 31's and 3:73's it made little difference whether the hard top, soft top, or no top was/wasn't on. I averaged about 15 or so. Indeed the mileage will go up some as the motor loosens up. But for me, head winds and driving habits are the biggest killers.

10 mpg is DEFINITELY too low. You must be running way too rich for some reason.

How many miles on the rig?

That's about what I get on my Unlimited with the auto tranny, 4" lift and 34s.

Do you have an auto or manual? The auto is not an efficient transmission and sucks away a lot of power.

As far as the difference btw top on and top off, it's about aerodynamics.

Yeah, I know it's not aerodynamic in the least, and worse with top off.

It is an Auto transmission (much to my dismay).

Is it possible to easily change the mix? Last car I worked on the carb was a 64 Ford, about 20 years ago... I'm sure it's a little different now...

No. It's all computer controlled.

14-18 mpg is the norm for an unmodded older TJ I think

My 98TJ does 14-15mpg with 31' tires and no other mods

I just got home from a 3300 mile road trip through Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, and back home to Washington. My bone-stock 2006 Unlimited w/ automatic and hardtop averaged 20.8 mpg for the trip. My best was 22.9 mpg, my worst was 18.4 mpg. The Jeep had 2000 miles on it when I left and has 5300 on it tonight.

One thing I noticed is the fuel mileage drops drastically above 70 mph even though I'm only turning 2100 rpm at 70. I ran very little on the interstate highways but what interstate driving I did was in Nevada and Idaho where the speed limit is 75 mph and everybody does 80+. I figure the decrease in mileage is more due to wind resistance than engine speed. I'd bet the wind resistance loads up on an increasing curve with road speed rather than a linear increase.

Anyway, I was very pleased with the gas mileage and the Jeep ran like a top.
