Now maybe this is an obviously stupid idea, and you can thwack me if you can dispell my theory (I always deserve a hard thwack after a couple of beers anyway). I have been playing with the thermal dynamics under the hood of my '96 XJ 4.0L doing various things such as isolating cold incoming air via insulated tubing and air filter box w/ram air, relocating the manifold air temp sensor outside the manifold itself, wrapping injectors and fuel lines in heat resistant material, sealing the radiator edges with foam to force more air through it and insulating the intake from the exhaust with heat wrap. I do not know the exact benefits other than colder air into the motor makes more hp and I'm assuming a colder engine bay overall makes for a generally cooler running motor (an early measurement in my custom airbox before it was completely sealed and insulated showed 20 degrees celsius decrease to that of the engine bay)...I've seen a noticeable difference in throttle response (maybe 5 or 10 hp im guessin) and an additional 75 kilometers per 76 liters of fuel (sorry its metric BUT THIS IS AUSTRALIA)...these look like significant gains so im wondering.....what would happen if one were to apply a 1-2" holesaw in a few places above the seam in the firewall to vent even more hot air out of the engine bay through the cowl vents? I've never seen this done or even heard of any mention of it but my thinking is if the dashboard starts to smoke i should be able to get out in time. Any comments on this? Roger-Roger
