I have decided the YJ is the Jeep for me. Having borrowed a friends recently and enjoyed riding in it often, I am looking to purchase one as a replacemen daily driver/weekend trailrunner.

My question is, what should I be concerned with in terms of rust or other points which can not be fixed with ease when I go out and look at Jeeps (dealer or private party).

Any areas in particular that I should get down and check for rust? (i live in the salt belt, so yes it is a concern Smile )

Or are the YJ's generaly lacking in rust, or prone to it?

Thanks!

cool, thanks for all the info. so theres really only two spots prone to rust it seems, thats good news.

hey, quadna, if that was a 5spd, I'd be very interested! im sure she'll sell it at that price Wink

still need to sell my 93 camaro z28, with only 73k miles for only 4,000 USD Smile (tell your non-jeep friends!) but as soon as she's gone, I'll be in the market!

thanks again guys!

Well, looks like my camaro is sold tomorrow, the guy's supposed to come by with the money in the evening, 4k is what I'll be getting for it.

Now, if I wanted to pick up a Jeep right away, I'd probably be looking at only spending around 3500, because of inspection, tags, tax, etc would prob take up the 500 extra. Now here's a question or two for you.

Even if I'm not going to be doing SERIOUS offroading right away, should I even begin to consider a 4cyl YJ? I really would like to avoid it as much as possible, because I've driven my buddy's 94 4-cyl many a time, and the thing is just an absolute turd all-around on the street, no pick-up whatsoever. Does this reflect its abilities offroad, or is it actualy capable in that area? I mean, don't hear me wrong, it's still a blast to drive because of the Jeep feeling you get when you ride. Should I just hold out and try to find a 6cyl and maybe spend a little more initialy and be happy?

Thanks all.

eh i've got a '94 w/ the 4-banger and 5-speed and i can honestly tell ya its got plenty of torque to turn my 33's just as long as you keep it in 4-low and up to 3rd gear, typically that's all you need for any REAL wheeling. i've ran quite a few trails (10 or so) with this setup and have never really had power problems... usually the clutch slips up pretty good before you run out of power. rofl
