I am looking at a '96 Jeep Cherokee to purchase. I was wondering if there are any special areas where there might be rust problems? The vehicle spent the first 7 years in Michigan so I'm concerned there could be rust issues.

Any insight anybody can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Steve

Rust seems to vary up here in NH. Mostly it seems to be right under the doors where the tires kick up dirt/salt. I have also seen it where the frame is welded to the body/floor boards. These Jeeps seem to leak water in from the rear hatch and firewall which leads to rust in the back and under the pedal area. You can usually tell if the firewall is leaking (not caused by rust) by a musty smell or the front seat anchors showing rust. Lastly they seem to get a patch of rust above the top corners of the wind shield. All in all, the XJ usually holds up well to rust.

I would check the undercarriage, especially behind the transfer case. It's not the end of the world but you might squeeze a few dollars out of them by looking at the upper shock bolts, exhaust system, brake rotors, etc. I've had my 91 since new and driven it on the entire east cost, Alaska, and Hawaii and the back is the area with the most problems rust wise.

Peace.
