I have a '97 XJ but it's 2-wheel-drive. I get around 17 or 18 in town and about 23 - 24 on the highway.

I'm getting around 15 or 16 if I keep my foot out of it. I was getting better but I haven't changed anything but the oil in years! Shocked LOL

Headers, high flow cat converter and high flow exhaust. I don't know how muchi it will help you xj guys but a K&N air filter, Flowmaster 50 series, and AEM throttle body spacer got me another 2-3 mpg in town (17-18 mpg total) and a whopping 23 on the highway. Not bad for a 5.2L V-8. Of course I only get about 15 mpg with a lift and roof basket now.

An MSD ignition system could also help you gas wise. I was told by a guy with an old camero that it did wonders for his performance and gas milage. Its amazing what people talk about while filling up their gas tanks at 3 dollars per gallon.

Ok, that settles it. I'm gonna have to do some tuneup work.
I'm getting something like 17 mpg on the highway at best, and something like 10 or 11 mpg in the city. This on a bog standard truck; 235/75 15's and no lift.

Leaving modifications aside for the moment, what do you guys think should be checked first, given that the motor seems to run okay and isn't throwing any codes? I'm thinking about changing the spark plugs, maybe running some fuel injector cleaner, maybe checking the engine compression and fuel pressure? Any other suggestions? How about the O2 sensor? Would that throw codes if it was out of kilter, or could it just result in worse mileage?

I get 15 in town and 20-24 on the HWY. If I don't speed around town and keep the rpms down i can get 17 in town. I don't know why I get ok milage. Before the lift and tires i was getting something like 19/27 town/hwy. CRAZY!! But the Jeep has been very well maintained. I bought it well over a year ago and when i got it i paid 2k cash for a 93 with less than 100k miles on it. The guy i got it from included my RE 4.5" lift with it for that price!! I had to put it on myself, but thats not bad seeing as it is at least a $400 lift. And get this, I sold my 90 YJ for $3,500 just after buying the XJ.

Sorry about the ranting, I just went off on it without thinking.

RE 4.5" is more like $700 to $1000 depending in which kit it is. You got a nice deal.

Now go rip an axle out & come tell us about it! LOL Shocked
