My Jeep has been sitting for the last 6 months because it just died suddenly... I wasn't getting spark or fuel. Today I had time to mess with it for a few hours and was troubleshooting everything. The coil was getting power but no spark when cranking. We could get the fuel pump to have power if we straight ran a wire from the pump to the battery.
Now for the fun part...
While checking for spark again, I had #1 spark plug wire unplugged and put a screwdriver in it and let it rest on the valve cover. While my friend tried to startthe car I could see sparks hitting the valve cover then all of a sudden 2 seconds later the Jeep was running. I put the wire back on the plug and the thing runs awesome! This has happened in the past and so I am not sure what could cause this to happen. For all you Jeep gurus out there try to figure this one out..

Sounds to me like one of the position sensors is going. It may have 2, one for the crankshaft and one under the distributor. They are hall effect sensors and die or get intermittent. When they fail the computer doesn't know the engine is turning so no spark or fuel. I had 1 go bad that took a couple months to find because whenever I'd try to test it it would start. Eventually it didn't start and I could see with my voltmeter it was bad, the voltage hovered around 3v. It's supposed to be 5v or ground depending on where the shafts are. Most repair manuals tell you how to test. Good luck.
