First thing to do is check for vacuum leaks. A leak will make for higher idle because extra air is getting in. You can cap the vacuum line off the intake manifold temporarily to see if it helps but this will affect lots of things like power brakes. Good luck.

I would replace the fuel filter first. If that doesn't do it I would take a fuel pressure check since it happens over 65mph and sometimes the throttle gets soft.
Just my 02

Shocked Shocked Shocked
sounds just like my wife's 88 xj was a couple weeks ago!!!
tried cap n rotor, filter was gonna be next but alas it died on road (ewwww like a ford) (lol mines a zj 97) anyhoo, the puter thing under the coil was partly at fault , but the worst problem was the crankshaft position sensor mounted at the top of the tranny. seemingly the wire on this sensor is a common problem for partial breakage (hence the running good sometimes) right at the sensor body. part was 56 bucks and change. wish i knew that b4 she had it towed Crying or Very sad save yerself some time n money and check that puppy out.

p.s. i'm new to the forum just started reading today but when i saw this problem i had to share our experience in hopes of helpin a jeeper!!!
good luck Very Happy
