I replaced my right front hub, U- Joints on both sides and my steering dampener on my 98 JGC w/ 4.0L 6cyl last weekend. Now when I go in reverse the first turn I make makes a clunk sound… it only happens once. Then it when I put it in drive and move forward, the first turn I make makes the same sound and I stress it only happens on the first turn in either direction. After the initial clunks the jeep runs very smooth. To get my steering dampener out I had to pound on it w/ a hammer where it connects to the drang link, could I have bent something or could this be a tie rod problem (I plan on replacing them soon anyway).
Any/All help is appreciated.

Thanks

is your jeep full time 4 wheel drive?

kinda sounds like you got something binding....going from reverse to forward & when turning??? seems like binding to me....maybe the front driveshaft is worn? you could take it out & try driving without it & see if it still does it.

it may help narrow down where it is coming from.

Put the front axle on Jack stands and wiggle every component on the front axle.. Control arms .. Track bar ... Steering linkages.. U joints.. Whatever ...

You will probobly find what is loose then..

My 94 Grand cherokee just started doing that since the last time i went out 4x4ing. I've tore the front end apart and yet to have located the source. Mine is more located to the passenger front. Only clunks once when changeing direction..

It is the all wheel drive model btw.
