I have got a 98 jeep grand cherokee 5.9L It has a check engine light on.
Here are the symptoms,
10.7 mpg
Engine pings like crazy
Shifts are prolonged
Sometimes it has extended cranking
I brought it in to a shop and the guy scanned it and said it had a speed sensor code so I replaced that and it did nothing.
I looked for an EGR valve but it doesn't seem to have one
I want to check the timing but How do you get it in base timing, and what should the timing be?
Any answers or suggestion would be appreciated.
The thing that makes me mad is I am a mechanic(heavy deisel) I got out of cars 7 years ago, and my snapon scanner isn't updated enough to read what the computer is doin!!!

if its like all the other jeeps the timing is computer controlled and there is no way to set it.

Pinging and bad gas mileage................ Sounds like you drive a jeep.... rofl

I dont know of any way to manually set the timing but are you sure the sparkplug wires arent crossed or maybe you have a dead plug.. Check or change the wires and the plugs and see what happens...

Also might want to clean the Air charge temp sensor.. That makes the computer do some crazy stuff if its dirty or not working...

I realize that it is because it is a jeep, but this is something that has got alot worst, the plugs and wires werent changed to cause the problems but this thing is getting 10.7 mpg, I talked to someone else with the same jeep and he is getting 18 mpg, that is what i was getting 2 years ago.
How can I retreive the trouble codes with out paying a shop 80$ an hour to tell me something that probably wont fix it??

Autozone will pull the codes for free...

Try that air charge temp sensor Its on the passenger side of the intake it looks like this..

It will make the engine run like crap and get really crappy fuel mileage..
If you ask for the part for a 98 dodge truck with 5.9 it will be cheaper..

and for the shifts maybe the Throttle position sensor is bad as well..

Does that engine have a Cam position sensor???[/img]
