I am doin a complete frame up build of a CJ7. I have been searching long and hard for parts from all over the U.S., Frame, motor, transmission, axles, tub, everything, and know just about what i want. I just wanted someones opinion about what type of transmission i should get.

I will have a rebuitl 258 I6, with about 200 to 300 HP
A rebuilt Dana 300 Twin Stick, High strength output shaft
F/R Dana 44 with Detroit lockers, 4.56 gears, and superior axles
A fully refurbished frame and body

But i have no idea of the tranny i should get. I hear that the stock 4 and 5 speed manuals are bad becuase they are weak, and want to know what type of super string 4 or 5 speed manual i should put in. Thanks

I think it depends on what you got. If you have a T18 four speed you're set. It has a great granny low and is practically bullet proof in you set up. If you have a T-4 or T-5 you'd probably like an upgrade. They are marginal with stock stuff but if you have 200+ out of your 258 don't expect too much from them. A Ford NP435 will bolt up to your engine and then you'd would just need the adapter for the D300 and its a good tranny. Strong gearbox with granny low. You could consider the late model Wrangler 5 speeds too. Not ultra low 1st gear but can handle some horsepower. Hope this helps!
