Anyone that can assist figuring this out would be revered as a god.
I recently purchased a 96 Cherokee Sport 4.0 and all of the demon problems with it. I have hashed through most of them on my own, but this one is getting the best of me.
The other night while driving in a rainstorm, hit a bump and the speedometer went to zero and then returned. After that every with subsequent bump both the speedometer and the tach dropped to zero and then returned. Now, two days later, the speedometer and the tach are stuck at zero and the fuel gauge reads past full. As we all know dealers won't hand out information unless you pay them all your cash and your first born child. Also, the Haynes manual is useless in this case. I don't own the factory manual yet, so once again any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Dave (new guy)

Check the grounds (you'll need to pull the cluster out of the dash). Different gauges on the cluster ground through different circuits so the symptoms you are seeing make sense.

There are two ground circuits on the gauge cluster. When you look at the circuit board, the GND circuit is for the cluster lights temp, oil pressure, and voltmeter. The LGD circuit on the board is for the tach, speedo, gas gauge and low fuel light. Hook a new ground into the LGD circuit and that should solve your problem.

Yeah mine is doing the samething. Mine appears to be Tach and Speedo. Wife taps the bottom right corner of the dash and walla its back. She drives it and I guess she likes the Fonzi way of taping to fix it.

Is there a correct way to pull the dash apart? Remember Im a TJ guy so this XJ stuff is well greek to me.

The FSM has a pretty detailed description on how to properly take it apart. I'd highly recommend picking one up. Wink

The Phantum is now to be moved to god status,we will biuld a statue and kneel before it.
The answer to the other question is;just chase out the screws around the dash bezel. After that it just pulls right off.It helps to pull off the cigarette lighter and such to free up a little play in the wiring harness.I also reccomend taking off the plastic collar around the steering column as well (3 torx screws)
to give you a little room to yank off the bezel without profanity, voilence,or religious sacrafice of any kind.
I appreciate the quick response, hopefully I'll be able to get into it today, interstate travel is more tricky when you "think" your'e doing 80.
thanks guys!

Um...yea. shock I've said it before and I'll say it again...I'm just another backyard mechanic with a decent set of tools. Wink

Now that I've taken the thread off topic, I'll reprimand myself....let's keep the thread on point. rofl
