88 Cherokee 4.0. Sometimes the idle will race to about 2000 rpms and will not come down. It happens when I start it and after I drive for a while. Any ideas?

Clean the throttle body and IAC motor. You can check the the IAC motor voltage, but I don't know what the numbers are for that year.

Also the TPS is adjustable on 87-90 models...but here's the catch: there are differnet TPS sensors used on autos and manuals and there were two different TPS vendors (Benedit and Renix). So you'll have to find the right settings for the brand of TPS as well as for the tranny you have. Again, I don't have the numbers for that year, but the FSM and/or specific TPS manuals would have this, but a google search should turn up the numbers as well.

If it's an auto, verify signals to/from the TPS and TCU. These sensors talk to each other to determine the best shift points. The FSM should have test proceedures. If it's a manual disregard.

Do you hear any kind of high pitched hiss or whine from the engine bay at some point when it's running? That would indicate a vacuum-leak either at the TB or intake manifold. Also check all the vacuum lines. Don't eyeball them, use a gauge. Loss of vacuum could cause high idle.

Good luck.

If your 88 is an automatic you can dsiconnect the the TPS.
The engine will run fine. It may stall on occasion or backfire thru the throttle body. Emergency only. The connector to disconnect is the flat one.
If you disconnect the wrong connector the transmission wont shift out of first gear.Yes the TPS is adjustable. TPS about $55.00
