occaisonally (usually in the cold or early morning) the engine races after pressing the gas. i.e. i would be in first, shift at 2000 rpms and the rpm's will actualy go up as high as 500-800 more as i get into 2nd. It usually only lasts for 10-15 mins of driving, but it's a little scary when you upshift and the car actually surges ahead a little bit without you doing anything. It also happens in neutral when i simply press the gas, and when i shift into neutral when coasting at a light or stop sign. any ideas as to what it could be?

I had a vacuum line blow off the intake after a bad backfire in the engine while starting. This caused the 4-liter to rev around 2k regardless of engine temp. Check all of the hoses on the intake for leaks. The TPS and IAC would be my next suspicions.
