gear ratio

What happenes if I put axles on that have the wrong gear ratios

You mean if you have different ratios in your axles (i.e. 3.73 front and 4.56 rear)? If you put it into 4wd, you likely break your axle gears and/or your transfer case.

You can't really have a "wrong" ratio as long as both the front and rear ratios are the same. Now if you have gears that are too high you will be hurting for power. Too low a gear and you will be revving your engine high and not have as high a top speed.
