I just bought a 91 yj, and I'm just curious whether I'm getting all the power out of it that i should,

speed for example - i can get it to about 55 mph in 5th gear at about 2500 rpms, should I be able to do better than that? or is that just old jeep syndrom, how can I improve that?

Any thoughts, similar experiences, or solutions would be welcomed

How big are the tires? Which engine? Jeeps aren't known for speed, but you should be able to do a bit better than that.

well the engine is the standard 4 cylinder, I'm not quite what size the tires are, but they aren't big, they're just all terrain

Yeah if you could post the tire size and gear ratios from the front or rear axle tag, that may help.

Is the exhaust manifold cracked? Its a common occourance and will/can cause a long list of problems that end up costing you engine power.

I just drove my new to me YJ to work for the first time today. It was a total dog. 4-lane highway, 55 mph speed limit. Couldn't use 5th gear at all. 4th gear only if pedal was on the floor. 3rd gear was OK but then the RPMs are screaming. I am desperately hoping this is not normal.

I'm thinking about doing a tune-up on the engine to see if that helps. It has 137,000 miles on it, and the guy I bought it from didn't tell me much at all about the history of the Jeep. I do have 265/75-16 tires, but that shouldn't be killing this thing that bad.

OH, and mine is 2.5L/AX5 bone stock except tires and 4.10 gears.
