I guess it was inevitable, just a matter of time but it happened saturday evening. Got to take a helicopter ride to the ICU.

I was out in the driveway, working on the waverunners. Gonna pull the carbs off the one and clean it out. Had the air filters off, and plugs out. Dont really remember much of why or how or what, but I know that I went to turn the motor over and the starter was in a dead spot (does it from time to time)

I grabbed a wrench and reached in to tap the starter. Turned it over once or twice and then all hell broke loose. Best I can figure I shorted something out with the wrench on the starter and residual fumes went up. Carbs backfired and the entire opening which I was leaning over blew up in a flash fire.

Got to the local ER and all the skin on my nose and ears was more or less melted off , after an inital look over they decided they wanted me in a burn unit, and fast. Throat showed signs of burning, all nose hair was gone ect ect.

Got 10mg of morphine that didnt even thouch the pain, intubated (and restrained) and got medivacced to the nearest burn unit (20 minute flight)

The rest is pretty foggy, woke up sunday and spent till yesterday in ICU, got moved to a regular room, and left today.

Doctors say I got REALLL lucky, as the burns in my throat were minor, my nose is pretty bad, and my ears not the best. No eyebrows or eyeashes, and lost about 3/4 of an inch of hair. REst of my face is ugly but only 1st degree. Everyone was absolutely amazed at how fast I recovered from the initial burn. My arm has some real freaky looking burns on it, and my neck is a nice purple color.

Should be interesting to see how well my face recoverers, docs say it should be a full recoverly. Right now I have to scrub it twice a day and recoat it with some special cream.

I think Ill be letting the shop do my carb work on the skis from now on.

Next time I take a ride on a helicopter I would really like to remember it

Wow! Shocked A simple project turns into a nightmare. Confused Sorry to hear it as well. And also hope a speedy recovery. Wink

And I know all about how morphine doesn't do much. Next time tell them you want demmeral! Ahhhh....that stuff is great! Very Happy I didn't care if I was in pain. Morphine just made me want to puke and did little for any pain. Advil would have worked better. Rolling Eyes

All things considered I definately lucked out. As of today you can barely tell it happened unless you knew or look closely at me.

I think I have wolverine healing powers, ,y family says I just used up another of my 9 lives, so depending who you go by I have 4 or 5 left

Went to the Doc today and he was amazed at how much I had healed up already. Infection risk is pretty much over, but he told me the sun can F me up. Its all new skin 3-4 layers in in some places so i have to stay out of direct sunlight for 6-12 months. Enter vampire mode.

The whole situation is almost surreal, having gone from life flight last sat, to out drinking this friday night like it never happened. Im starting to think I may be unbreakable. Finger
