I'm trying to track down the source of a knocking noise on my '89 XJ. It only happens when I start it the first time each day. As the engine is cranking it sounds like a portion of the exhaust system is hitting the body. It definitely isn't an engine noise. I've crawled under the truck and tried to find something loose but everything is nice and tight. Could it be something like a worn out engine or transmission mount that allows too much flex during start-up?

Thanks for any advice.

There's an exhaust mount right above the crossmember near the transfer case (assuming it's 4x4). It is a metal piece that slides into a rubber mount. I've had the metal rust and the rubber fall apart in the past. It will allow it to bang on the crossmember if bad. I'd start there. You can also crawl underneath and shake the exhaust at different points to see if it is causing the noise.

Hi, i have the same problem on startup, i think it's my exhaust down pipe hitting something for a few seconds as i start up! (as the engine lurches) i'll have to look and see if there's any marks, i could have a dodgey engine mount!......cya

Mine did that too, it turned out to be the downpipe mount on the trans. crossmember. It s on the pass. side and the rubber can wear out allowing the pipe to have metal to metal contact.
