This is just an awesome forum, thanks to you all. Having this info here has helped me decide to definately keep my 97 That I have put a lot of work into recently. (fuel pump, water pump, starter, window lift)

I used the key method of pulling codes from my XJ and it gave me 17, 35, and confusingly, 66. I read what the other two are for, but the list stops at 65. Any Idea what 66 is ? I bought this XJ at Auction 4 years ago and it apparently was an ex-gov't model of some sort. It has the upcountry off-road package and the NP-242 tranfer case. Is the 66 code possibly specific to that?

I am trying to get the check engine light off. I need to get it inspected and emissions passed.

Ohh, and also, what is the EXT Idle switch for in the middle console? It appears to raise the idle 100-200 rpm, Is it for warming up the engine in cold climates?

The EXT idle switch was an option on cop and gov't models. Basically it kicks up the RPM's so you can have heavy draw electric items running at idle and not kill the battery/alternator...things like blinky lights, sirens, radios, PA systems, etc.

Now, DTC 66 (I just added it to the list as well) is "No CCD Message From TCM" and/or "No CCD Message From BCM". The CCD Bus networks all the control modules (computers) and allows them to work together, so this means the Transmission Control Module (TCM), Body Control Module (BCM) and/or the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) can't interface with each other. In plainer language, the onboard computers don't know what the others are doing so all of them are confused.

You say you got it at auction? Any chance it was sitting for awhile? If so, my bet is that a critter got in there and chewed some wires. First thing to do is check all the harnesses for damage. Since it was a gov't/cop model, another good bet is they removed some things connected to a module...or even re-mapped/flashed the PCM. So it's possible they screwed up a connector someplace. Unplug the harnesses from the modules and check the connectors for bent, busted or corroded terminals.

My money would be on one of those two as the root of the problem...but failing that, you can check to make sure that the TCM is getting power. You'll need a factory service manual to find the pinouts to test. Worst case, it's a bad PCM or TCM. Again, the FSM has procedures to test the individual modules.
