Just wanted to say thanks to all the good folks who documented the 249-242 swap.

I got lucky a while back and picked up a 242 T-case on Ebay for $150 for my 95ZJ. The year was matching and everything looked the same. I had the intention of rebuilding it before I put it in but being the fool I am I have too many projects going on at the same time (69-GTO). Anyway the day before I promissed my daughter I would take her on the "Kids ATV ride" I found myself installing the case.

Other then not having the linkage in the right position after hooking it back up everything went pretty smooth. After I started the car up I heard some rattling in neutral but everything seemed to work correctly with no grinding.

We took the trip and once on the road the rattling is gone but again in neutral you can still hear it.

I'm probably about to answer my own question but is this a loose chain in the transfer-case? Seems to me when the pressure is on the chain while driving it's quiet. When the pressure is off its loose and rattling around. Am I right?

Possible or it could just as easily but the planetary gears . They are known to give out in 242's after you abuse them.. I wish I had pictures of how bad I destroyed mine .. But alas I cannot find them..

Only one way to find out I guess. Any recommendations on where to buy good gears and chain for this?

Google search .. There are a few places that sell rebuild kits for T cases...

Or do what I did and find a cheap 231 and swap it in ... (Its almost the same as the 242 swap...)

Are the planetary gears the same in the 249? I still have that case laying around here.
