i have a problem with my shift linkage. 2wd is fine, but when i engage 4hi, it reads about halfway up the gate. when the lever is pulled all the way to the tooth stop in the gate (where normal 4hi would be read and engaged) it reads that as neutral. i looked under the car and loosened the trunion lockbolt, and tried to move the shift rod back farther, however that did not help or i did not do it correctly. any help here?

You mean it isn't lining up with the indicators on the console? Don't worry about it. As long as it functions okay and you can adequately get the t-case into each selection, it doesn't matter if the handle lines up.

it wont stay in 4hi though. if i hit a bump or anything it will jolt it out of 4 hi and into neutral. because its not being held in position, since the linkage is off

Adjust the linkage so it functions correctly. Don't worry about the shifter lining up with the designations on the console.

i fixed it, thanks. i had to loosen the trunnion lock bolt when it was engaged in 4hi, and move the lever to the correct spot then tighten everything back up
