i just rebuilt the engine in my 90 xj. i got the whole thing put back together and cranked up. it is an AMC 242 inline 6. the distributer does not turn in order to set the ignition timing as i was told to do by a mechanic friend. the manual i have says the timing is not adjustable. i know this is wrong because there are timing marks on the timing gear cover and the harmonic balancer. the marks on the timing cover go from 0 to around 20. my mechanic friend told me that 6 or 8 degrees advanced is normal. my engine runs like crap at these settings. i have currently set the timing to 16 degrees before TDC, and of course it still runs like crap. does anyone know the correct setting?

A 90 XJ I believe is a Renix system and it is self timing.
Most poor running Renix motors are due to a sensor or the EGR valve.
What is it doing? Cutting out? Dying when you let off the gas? etc....

All cars with computers control the ignition timing.
The marks on the crankshaft pulley are for reference for assembling.
If you do manage to move the distributer for timing the computer will
bring the timing back to its known reference electronically.
