Looking to buy a 97 XJ 4x4 with 172K miles.
Upon startup got 2 give a little kick of gas then it catches up......
Was going in circles testing the 4x4 and it stalls 3 times....just shuts right off! (power steering switch maybe??????)
Takes a long crank and a kick of gas to get it going again then its fine.
Runs great going down the road though.
Sound like a CPS symptom right?
But, get back to the dealer and now upon accelerating in park the rpms come back down real slow...(have a 96 XJ with 196K and it comes down nice and quick)....could idle a little more solid too. Whats this about?

Check engine light is on so I pulled the codes.......12 and 21
12 (batt recently disconnected) probably from them trying to clear the codes.
21 (o2 sensor problem or bad) But which one?????

I need to make a move soon if I want this XJ but have no time for BS problems that don't end!
Could it just be as simple as replacing the o2 sensors???
ANY IDEAS APPRECIATED! THEIR MECHANIC DOESN"T EVEN KNOW HOW TO PULL A CODE!

I know the answer is looking 4 me.
Thanks

Unless there's a loose wire the O2 sensor is bad. I think these have 2 so you need to narrow it down. They run around $60 or so. I'd make them replace them both then reset it to see how it runs.

Went back today and the dealer's mechanic did something right. He wasn't there but the dealer said he gave it a tuneup (exactly what was done is a mystery)but.........something right apparently.

Started right, idled right and no check engine light.....took it for a ride.
Here's where it gets good............When it reached normal temp felt a slight surge of power for a second then hello check engine light. Kept driving for a bit...no problem.
Pulled over and turned it off, pulled the codes up and there is code 21 again.
NOW o2 sensor is making sense...................(surge when reaching normal temp) I say its the o2 sensor 4 sure now. Whatever they did helped too a lot.

What do you fellas say? Shocked

P.S. My BMW did the same thing and had to change o2 sensor to get it to pass state emission test. And NO I am not a traitor cuz I just sold the two beamers and now have 2 XJs (86 and 96) and I want this 97 for my lady for winter. And my bro's got the 98 TJ. My XJ's getting a plow cuz it told me it wants it! Will post pics when done.

Thanks fellas!

Almost forgot.......whats the easiest way to narrow down which one is bad???
Can get new Bosch sensors at wholesale price but is it safe? Some folks will argue about that.

Thanks

What are you using to pull the codes? Autozone can usually narrow down which one it is with their reader. They do not charge with the assumption you buy the part from them. I put a Bosch in my last vehicle with no issues.

Pulled the codes from the dash by key.
