NAME CHANGE FINALIZES CONSOLIDATION OF RANGER DISTRICTS

Blacksburg, Va. – The New Castle and New River Valley Ranger Districts of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests officially changed their name to the Eastern Divide Ranger District.
The new name was chosen by district employees and reflects the fact that the Eastern Continental Divide runs through the district.

As a result of the consolidation, the former New Castle District office has become a work center housing nine employees specializing in fire, recreation, timber, road maintenance and law enforcement. It will no longer be open to the public during normal day-to-day operations.

In order to assist residents with this transition, the New Castle Work Center will be open temporarily on the second and fourth Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from September 13 through November 8 to sell wood permits and distribute keys for disabled hunter access. Wood permits are also available by mail through the District headquarters located in Blacksburg.

Cindy Schiffer, who has served as District Ranger for the New River Valley district since 2001, oversees the newly combined district. She has been with the Forest Service for 25 years and has held positions on the Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota and Wyoming, the San Bernadino National Forest in California and was a district ranger on the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia.

“Over the past months I’ve explored much of the former New Castle district and I’m excited about what the area offers, the high quality workforce at the New Castle Work Center and the warm welcome I have received from the people living in the area,” Schiffer said.
