My gas guage (When it gets down to 1/2 tank) starts acting crazy, in my 1998 (4.0) Grand Cherokee. It will drop down to empty, and then back up to 1/2 , slowley, over and over. Plus,,, the darned thing will only have a gallon or two in it at that time, but allways regestures more then it really has. I could have what shows to be a full tank and still put in ten gallons. I will run empty on the 3/8 markon the guage.
WHAT THE HELL?
Thanks for any help, from Tom

Sounds like the fuel gauge sensor to me. If I remember correctly there was a recall on the 97-98 sending units...

My gas gauge does the same thing. It gets really annoying when the needle keeps bouncing off of "E" and the low fuel light comes on. I called the dealership and asked them about it and they said that it sounded like the sending unit in the fuel tank was going bad. Then they went on to say that the repair costs around $700 because they have to lower the fuel tank out of the vehicle. I generally just go by my trip odometer and wait until I get close to 250 miles and then fill up. You just have to remember to reset the trip odometer everytime you fill up.
