Hey all, I just recently aquired a CJ-7 77 with a 304 AMC -V8 I think I broke her last night as I was driving not fast but approx 40 mph and heard a loud bang. She than started making a loud tapping noise. At first I thought I had dropped the fan belt but than realized it was much worse. I am trying to get to the pistons cause I pulled the rockers and push rods and everything looks ok. Is there a way to pull just the one side without removing everything else?

Thanks,

~Jessie

I was thinking I either spun a bearing or one of the pistons took a dump. All in all I think I am just going to pull the whole shebang and go with another engine. I think I might have found a donor for 300. Than I am going to pull the rear Amc 20 and put in a Dana 300. I just have to find an adapter plate for the tranny cause she has the T-19 in her.

Indeed might have spun a bearing...but I'd probably try a couple simpler things before I tear things apart. What's your oil pressure and compression like? Can you simply put a rod (just about anything works) against your ear & the motor while running and narrow down where the ticking is coming from? Bang can be alot of things...including a backfire through the carb.

All the small block AMC V8's were pretty tough motors IMO. Heck, my 401 had almost 200k + miles on it when I sold it back in '98 and still ran pretty well...same with my old 360. I'm wondering if something much simpler happened.

Just my thoughts. Let us know what you find.

I know it was not a backfire through the carb because it was a continious hammering noise. I got out to check to make sure the fan wasn't hitting anything at first because it is a metal like hammering sound. I have a donor vehicle that I just bought for 300 so I am going to swap motors out and rebuild the 304 that I am having probs with. We will see where this goes. The guy that I am buying the donor off of also has a Dana 300 transfer case that is included in the price of 300 so I got a deal even if it is something more simple. I have a feeling it is not at this point. I am sending her down to him (due to my fustration and lack of knowledge) he will drop the new motor in her and put my 4 barrel and intake on her for an addtional 400 so I think that I am just going to take him up on his offer. He is a friend of my significant other and I trust him to do the work.

Very cool...sounds indeed like you got a good buy. Wink You are right, if you've already got the stuff lined up you'll be good to go. And I too would just have the intake and new carb thrown on as well. Heck, you are still way ahead.

Good luck.
