After driving on the freeway for about 100 miles in 5th gear, I was unable to shift into any gears other than 5th and neutral. The Jeep is a 4.0 liter with 5 speed manual trans. I've had absolutely no problem with the trans until now. As it sits, it will go into neutral easily and into 5th gear only if I start the engine and force it. I'd like to know if anyone has any suggestions before I yank out the trans.

Synchronizing gear? Have you checked the fluid level and/or changed it recently?

Mine gets sticky in the winter, I sometimes have to roll a little before it will go from reverse back into first. Or the other way around.

Definately check the fluid. I was having a problem with my (auto) tranny not shifting into 4th/downshifting without prompting and the problem has since gone away after having the tranny flushed. The fluid in mine I think was the first batch since the factory and it was damn near black, and burnt. Whenever I drove the car cold it was very slow. works much better now after the flush.

So, in summary, check the fluid and change if necessary. That may help, may not, but worth a try.

Thanks for the suggestions on the fluid. I did change the fluid which prorbably did need changing, but it didn't help the problem. I'm wondering if there is some kind of solenoid that locks out the overdrive from the rest of the gears. I hate to pull the trans before I have some idea what the problem is.
