My maintenance logbook says the axle fluid needs to be replaced every 12,000 miles, but only if the Jeep gets heavy-duty use, such as lots of off-roading, towing, etc. Mine does not; I use it for day-to-day city driving and occasional highway trips. What would happen if I don't have the fluid replaced? The dealership that services it charges a lot to do it, and I'm not able to handle the task myself. Thanks in advance for advice.

It's probably fine. 20k-25k miles is about normal. Albeit many never change their axle fluid at all (which isn't good). It's good to keep on top of that sort of thing and you'll be glad you did down the road.

And nothing says the stealership has to do it anyway. Most transmission, offroad shops, along with most service centers will be happy to do it for you...usually at less cost. If you change your own oil, it's not hard to pop the fill plug and check the level with your finger and look at the color of the lube too.

Hope that helps a little.
